Hello, I’m Mika Smith. I create mixed media illustrations for children’s books. I am based on the west coast of Canada and originally from Japan.

My work is inspired by the hidden worlds within everyday life, the shapes of rain, the patterns of forests, the personalities of animals, and the quiet stories of towns and streets. I am always drawn to light in the darkness. A tiny imperfection in perfect order, a bit of humour inside something very proper, or a quiet surprise hidden in everyday things. I enjoy revealing these small, unexpected moments in my drawings and hope children might discover them too.

I grew up in a nature-filled rural town in Japan, in a family that was always making something, building, sewing, and drawing. My dad was a bonsai grower, and our garden was filled with many bonsai trees. I was obsessed with peeking in and slipping my head under the tiny canopy, imagining that I was walking into another small world. Perhaps that is where my love for small hidden worlds began, and where it still lives in my drawings today.

After more than 20 years of life as a wife, a stepmom, a team-building facilitator, and an immigrant, I chose to bring my creativity into the world of children’s books. I could not let go of a promise I once made to my grandpa, who was a haiku poet.

I am a self-taught illustrator, developing my practice through continuing education at Emily Carr University and shaping my voice with The Good Ship Illustration.

こんにちは。オイルパステルや色鉛筆、コラージュなどを使って絵本のイラストを描いている、みかすみすです。

雨の形、森や木の模様、生き物や建造物が醸しだす「らしさ」とか性格みたいなものを見つけ、形や線やいろんなパターンにして描き出す作業はワクワクします。想像していなかった小さな世界がどんどん広がっていくようで。
もう１つ絵を描く中でいつも探しているのが、暗の中にある小さな光。たとえば、規則正しいものにポロッとある不完全さ、がちがちのキチンとさの中にあるユーモアとか、言うまでもない当たり前の中にアレっとした違和感の面白さとか。絵本の中で子どもたちがそんな矛盾や対極を見つけて楽しんでくれたらなと思っています。

子どもの頃から、日曜大工、裁縫、工作や絵描きと、ものづくりがあそびな日常の家族に育ちました。中でも父の趣味だった盆栽だらけの庭で、幹の根元に頭を突っ込んで覗き込んだ先に広がる小さな小さな森生き写しの世界には、瑞々しいコケや葉の1枚1枚、木のコブからシワまで、どっぷり入り込んで空想することがたまらなく好きでした。たぶん、わたしの細部描き込み愛はここから来ていて、絵の中に息づいていると思います。

カナダに移住し、夫婦、ステップファミリー、コーチング、移民としての暮らしを重ねながら、今は絵本という世界で子どもも大人も心が踊るような絵を思い描きつつ制作しています。それはちょうど、盆栽に頭を突っ込んでいたあの頃に、学校の先生であり俳人であった祖父と交わした夢の話の続きが、忘れられなかったからでもあります。

絵は独学ですが、Emily Carr Universityの継続学習課程で学びを続け、The Good Ship Illustrationでわたしの絵が語る物語表現を探っています。
