Hello, I’m Mika Smith. I create mixed media illustrations for children’s books, based on the west coast of Canada.

My characters and storytelling are inspired by the way children discover the world around them. My curiosity is shaped by forms, lines, and patterns found in everyday life, from trees and clouds to rain, the history of buildings, towns, and streets, and all kinds of creatures.

I was born and raised in a rural town in Japan and later moved to Canada. After more than 20 years of life as a wife, a stepmom, a team-building facilitator, and an immigrant, I chose to bring my creativity into the world of children’s books. I am a self-taught illustrator, developing my practice through continuing education at Emily Carr University and shaping my voice with The Good Ship Illustration.

I’m currently seeking representation and happily open to commission work and collaborations.

こんにちは、オイルパステルや色鉛筆、コラージュなどを使って絵本のイラストを描いている、みかすみすです。

わたしが心動かされるものは、日常の中で目にする木や雲・雨とか生き物それから街や通りに感じる歴史、そう言うものがみせる形とか線やパターンで、そこに自分の目を通して見えてくる独特で不完全な個性や物語です。だからこそ一番のあこがれは、目にするものの不思議さに目を見張り心動かされるセンスオブワンダーを持つ子供たちであって、いつもその感覚に心踊らされながら絵を描いています。

カナダに移住し、夫婦、ステップファミリー、コーチング、移民として生活する中、絵本という世界で心が踊る絵を描く活動をはじめました。それは学校の先生であり俳人であった祖父と交わした夢の話の続きが忘れられなかったからでもあります。
絵は独学ですが、Emily Carr Universityの継続学習課程で学びを続け、The Good Ship Illustrationでわたしの絵が語る物語表現を探っています。
